DEHS attorney Mark Marshall has been elected to the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, becoming the first South Dakota lawyer to receive the honor.
Membership in the Academy is by invitation only. To be eligible, the individual must have focused substantially on appeals during at least the last 15 years of their practice and have a reputation of recognized distinction as an appellate lawyer. Candidates for membership must be nominated by a present Academy member and the nomination is then reviewed by an evaluation committee. Nominees approved by that committee must be elected at a regular Academy meeting.
The Academy was founded in 1990 to recognize outstanding appellate lawyers and promote the improvement of appellate advocacy and the administration of the appellate courts. Membership is limited to 500 in the United States.
Marshall has been practicing law since 1981 and joined DEHS in 2000 after serving as federal magistrate judge. In addition to appellate work, Marshall also is frequently retained to conduct mediations and arbitrations.
