Mark Marshall is leaving the law firm after being appointed a magistrate judge in Rapid City.
Marshall, who joined the firm in 2000, was named to the full-time position by Circuit Judge Jeff Davis, presiding judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit. The 7th Circuit encompasses Pennington, Custer, Fall River and Shannon counties.
Marshall has been practicing law since 1981 and has previously served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for South Dakota. He is the first South Dakotan elected to the International Academy of Mediators and is a panel member for various alternative dispute resolution organizations, including the American Arbitration Association, FINRA Dispute Resolution and the National Arbitration Forum, He is also the first South Dakotan elected to the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.
In addition to mediations, arbitrations and appellate matters, Marshall has been significantly involved in insurance defense and insurance coverage matters, as well as health law and commercial litigation. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota in 1977 and graduated from the USD School of Law in 1981.
Among other things, magistrate judges have jurisdiction for preliminary hearings for felony cases, all criminal misdemeanor cases, small claims cases and civil cases under $12,000.
